The eJPT (eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester) is a practical, entry-level cybersecurity certification designed to validate the core skills required for junior penetration testers and ethical hackers. Offered by INE Security (formerly eLearnSecurity), it emphasizes hands-on ability to apply penetration testing techniques in real-world environments rather than rote memorization or theoretical multiple-choice questions. At its core, the eJPT is intended for beginners with foundational knowledge of networks, systems, and basic security concepts. There are no strict prerequisites, although familiarity with networking basics (TCP/IP, ports, protocols), operating systems (Linux/Windows), and common penetration testing tools will significantly improve your chances of success. Many candidates come from roles such as system administrators, IT professionals, security analysts, or those transitioning into cybersecurity. The eJPT exam stands out because it is 100% practical. Unlike traditional certification exams relying heavily on multiple-choice questions, this test places you in a virtual lab environment where you perform real penetration testing tasks and answer questions based on your results. Duration: Candidates are typically given 48 hours to complete the exam once they start. Most takers finish well within this window, often in 8–24 hours of focused work. Format: A combination of practical penetration testing tasks and 20 multiple-choice questions (or flag-style answers) derived from what you have uncovered during the hands-on portion. Passing Score: The passing threshold is generally set around 70–75% (depending on the exact version of the exam). Open-book: The exam is open-book, meaning you may consult your notes, documentation, and reference materials while working in the lab. Because the exam emphasizes real penetration testing scenarios, you’ll engage in tasks such as scanning networks, enumerating systems, exploiting vulnerabilities, and applying basic web application testing techniques. The eJPT evaluates four broad domains of penetration testing skills: Assessment Methodologies: Information gathering, port scanning, service identification, vulnerability discovery, and vulnerability impact evaluation. Host & Network Auditing: System information discovery, file and user enumeration, hash extraction, and file transfers in a compromised environment. Host & Network Penetration Testing: Exploiting vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, brute-force attacks, pivoting, and basic post-exploitation techniques. Web Application Penetration Testing: Identifying web vulnerabilities, directory discovery, brute-force login attempts, and reconnaissance. Tools commonly used during the exam include Nmap, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Wireshark, Netcat, Nessus, and other industry staples.
